  1. I am open to doing any idea, but one in particular that I like on the suggested projects was the one about putting ourselves in a situation where we are the minority. I feel like this would really show what true oppression feels like and would provide lots of information for our project.

  2. Title of Project: Balance of Power
The project conception is to discuss and research male and female roles in society. We will get our information by survey both men and women and by relating similar topics in our readings. We plan to compare gender roles today verses years ago and the changes made in-between these times. We plan to ask questions in our survey that question how both genders feel about women’s role in society and the household.
Most of the readings used in our project are found in our textbook. The first reading (found on page 129) we are going to study is The Politics of Housework. This highlights the expectations and roles of women in society and how it is limited to housework. The author, Pat Mainardi, uses a sarcastic tone in describing the satirical views of women and housework. It reflects the power dynamics of the male and female relations. Another reading is Maid to Order: The Politics of other Womens Work(found on page 107). In this article, it describes how women are expected to work for free solely because they are expected to be a homemaker. If women refuse to take this role, they are seen as the "outsider". It also shows how women are expected to pick up the extra jobs that no one else wants to take part in. The third reading is I see the Same Ho: Video Vixens, Beauty Culture, and Diasporic Sex Tourism(found on page 191). As media is becoming more and more influencing in today's society, women have been seen as "sex symbols" used to make money in the entertainment business.
The method of our project is going to involve surveys. The survey will ask both men and women different questions about their views of what is expected of women in today’s society. Each person in this group will be expected to ask 5 girls and 5 boys so we will have a well representative population in our study. This study will be especially representative of college students because most of the people interviewed will be a student at The University of Alabama. We will also record interviews will a random selection of 5 of these participants. After the information has been collected, we will create a PowerPoint presentation using charts and explanations to compare and contrast men and women’s different viewpoints.

  3. Good project conception. Although I am missing some sample questions. Make sure you are clear on the hypothesis or larger inquiry you are trying to learn more about...is it women and work or women in society or women in the media. IF it is all of these things, make sure you reflect some general understanding of the problem of gender as a social construction to orient your questions. You may also think about showing those you select to interview some dominant images/representations of women in society to garner reflection and responses from interviewees. Good luck!
