BRAINSTORMING--Group 3

Group Project Brainstorming -- Group 3

  1. After looking over the topic options in the packet, I think we should pick one that really relates to college students. This will be easier for us to discuss and easier for the class to understand. I'm open to do whatever but I was thinking we could do ours on something along the lines of homophobia. We could have students fill out surveys around campus because the majority of this campus is heterosexuals so it would be interesting to present their responses.

  2. I am open to whatever we choose to do. However, I do agree we should do something that would relate to us, and something that would be interesting for the class. The idea of homophobia is a good idea, i'll through out the idea of how beauty effects every aspect of our lives. Either one would work just fine though!

  3. Hannah, I agree that we should do something relevant to college students, and I don't really care what topic we use, but maybe we could interview students instead of having them fill out surveys and film their responses so we'd have something to show in class (sort of like the "what is a feminist?" video clip that we watched at the beginning of the semester).

  4. I really like the idea of surveying other students and even filming their responses. And I think homophobia would be a good topic. I think we would get a lot of different responses and that it could be really interesting. But I am up for whatever!

    Group Media Project Proposal

    Title: Investigating the Beauty Myth

    Presentation Date: April 25, 2011

Hypothesis: In the aftermath of our study, we expect to find that UA students have bought into the beauty myth by letting their ideas about beauty be shaped largely by the presentation of bodies in the media and the expectations of peers.

Project Conception: We plan to explore our generation’s perceptions of beauty while teaching students about the beauty myth by interviewing and surveying students on UA campus. Our group wants to reach out to our campus for diverse and differing opinions on beauty, and to get to the root of these perceptions of beauty in order to find out where our beauty ideals come from. We are constantly being told the story of beauty through the images in our media, a story that is reinforced by popular culture. You cannot read a magazine or watch television today without being bombarded by images of “ideal” beauty, but these “ideals” are presented as something to aspire towards. It is considered quite normal when people alter their appearance in order to fit an ideal, but when people choose not to give in to the pressure to alter themselves, they are alienated along with the rest of the population who possess traits other than the ones that are represented most often in the images we see in popular culture. We will find out what stories our society tells about beauty by asking students what is beautiful to them. We will ask them questions to find out how their own personal ideas about beauty were formed, such as: Why do you dress the way you do? Who do you surround yourself with? How do you “alter” your appearance, and for what reasons? What groups are you involved with?

Literature Review: Our group will use the following texts to guide and develop the focus of our project: “The Beauty Myth,” “Black Beauty Myth,” “I’m Not Fat, I’m Latina,” and “Straightening our Hair”

Project Method: For our project, we will use Survey Monkey in order to create an online survey, and the Samford Media Center in order to acquire the video materials we need in order to complete our interviews. We will also use Power Point to make a presentation that we can show in class in order to share our research and findings with our peers.

Project Contribution: We hope to bring awareness and understanding of the beauty myth and its impact on our generation by surveying and interviewing students on campus about their perceptions of beauty and then sharing our results with our classmates.

    Individual Group Member Tasks:
Paige, Lexi, Hannah, and Lauren: write the project proposal.
Aleisha, Paige, Lexi, Hannah, and Lauren: write up the questions for the survey
One group member: put it on Survey Monkey, then gather the results when the survey is closed
Everyone: go over the results and come to an agreed-upon conclusion
    Everyone: interviews students on campus
One or two group members: film students’ responses/document the event by taking pictures
Everyone: contributes to the Power Point; everyone will be responsible for a certain number of slides.

    Schedule of Completion:

Week of Monday, April 4: Write up survey and put it online
Spread the word about the survey

Week of Monday, April 11: Interview students and film responses

Week of Monday, April 18: Come to a conclusion about the results of the survey/interviews

  6. Great project conception and nice method...I'm glad you are using surveymonkey.com as well as audiovisual media forms. Make sure you create your question list with reference to the material in our course texts. Nice work, good luck!
