  1. I attended the PBS's "In The Life" episode with Kin4Life and it ended up being a very interesting event. The movie was very inspiring as it showed all the hard times these women faced while trying to believe their sexuality . The fact that their families weren't completely accepting must have been extremely hard. No matter what you are going through, you would hope your family would be there to support you, but that is not the truth in all cases.
I liked how Nor and I.Q, created a more insightful atmosphere when they decided to speak. I had never heard of their group before, but they help share knowledge that could only come from personal experience. It is good to see women, no matter if straight or gay, standing up for themselves in the harsh business of the music industry. They were willing to sacrifice a record deal just so they could stay true to who they believed they were.
Its also great to see women not transform to the more masculine side of music like female rappers we have read about in our textbooks. Kin4Life was willing to stay true to themselves and create a style of music different from anything else. If we had more women like this in all types of music, including country, rock, and hip hop, then this would create a ripple effect to all types of media. We all know that television, music, movies and even books help determine the attitude that Americans have, so hopefully more women like Nor and I.Q. could help dissolve the oppression lines between forced on females.

  2. I went to the PBS’s In The Life episode featuring KIN4LIFE. It is a group of homosexuals that travel around speaking about life as a gay or lesbian in our society. The video showed real people’s stories by following them around to show their every day life as a homosexual. They also explained their stories of how they came out and their experience with that. This group of people was a very strong band of people who are taking a stand and fighting back against the discrimination against them. Being able to physically see them tell their stories with so much feelings arising from them really allowed me to see how they just want to feel like normal people in our society.
Hearing the personal experiences made it that much better than reading it in a story-form. All the women answered every question asked, no matter if it was about their sexuality or career information. The openness made everyone feel comfortable to actually get a Q&A session going. The KIN4LIFE spoke for lesbian, black, and female rappers and their experiences through life—may their life been tough, but they shared every detail with the crowd in order to get their point across.
After listening to the group speak, it was so inspiration to watch such brave women take a stand for their beliefs. Even though I’m straight, it was hard to not get attached to their heart-warming stories. The struggles they faced make me feel lucky for the life I live and privileges I have not earned that I have. It also makes me want to start educating others on this issue to start an end to this discrimination.

  3. Lady Fest Deep South was very enlightening to me as a young woman. I attended the workshop dealing with Herbs Health for Women , at first I thought it was going to be kind of boring; but surely it become very interesting when the instructor started to explain in deep detail on how herbal medicine can treat cramps better than over the counter people medicine. It also became interesting when the topics of acne, stress and hormone balance became part of the decision. These are thing that I feel were most intriguing.
At this workshop the knowledge of different types of herb in day to day life was given off great. I learned that there are many herb preparation that can be used to get good sleep and herbs that can improve sex lives. For beginner the easiest way to apply herbs in daily life is through tea, which is one of the most common things to do. There are even recipes for making herbal lubrication, but this comes when you have had tuns of practice with herbs.
I was mostly moved when learning that women had been the herb healers for many years. They would heal problems like muscle cramps, stiffness and vaginal infection using only herbs. This was how they took care of their families. The only weakness to this process was the long periods of time it took to work. Over time hospitals and modern medicines sent this health way of healing out of style. However, there are still some people that practice herb healing.

  4. I also went to the PBS's in the life episode featuring KIN4LIFE. We watched a video about the lives of homosexuals and what their everyday life is like and the struggles that they face. They explained their experiences of coming out to their friends and family and how difficult it was because some of the parents didn’t accept or approve of their lifestyle. It made me think about the learning module we did a couple weeks ago where if we woke up and homosexuality was the norm and we had to explain how our lives would change. It would be very difficult to explain to your parents that you were gay when they were very against that life style so it was kind of cool to actually hear someone talk about what they went through. The women were very open in the discussion and I thought it was great that these women can feel that confident and be their true selves even when they are still getting discriminated against.
These women definitely encouraged me to stand up for what I believe in and made me feel that it was ok to be different. I learned a lot about what homosexuals go through on a daily basis and the constant struggles they face throughout their daily lives. I definitely felt that I had a heterosexual privilege because I don’t have to go through the things these people have to go through. These women are very brave to be able to get up and talk to people all over about these issues that they face. I was a very inspirational event and I learned a lot from it.

  5. @Matt Cape I also thought of our learning module the previous week after attending this event and reflecting what I just heard. I could never be as brave as those women, who seem so strong and open about their sexuality. It truly is inspirational to know there are people who can overcome the fear of what our society might judge of them for being themselves because that's an issue many people have to deal with, not only homosexuals, other oppressions too. It's hard to speak your mind and be yourself when it seems everyone is against you. These women showed me a strength that everyone should strive to have in their lives today.

  6. @Amanda Harrison I saw the Herbs event as one of the options and it caught my attention because I recently read an article on how some people use herbs for everything in their daily lives. It has become essential to many people for food, medicine, and sexually, just learning of that from your post. I never could image going as far as using herbs as a type of lubrication. Glad I got to read your post on what I missed out at that particular event!

  8. I went to go see PBS's in the life episode playing in Ten Hoor featuring KIN4LIFE on Friday with some of my classmates. I saw a lot of classmates there and we all very much enjoyed the screening. The screening was about gays and lesbians taking a stand against discrimination and fighting back. The clip showed different people's day to day life and how they struggle with being homosexual. It seemed like in many of the stories the person's families weren't very accepting of them and showed how this made them frustrated and angry. I liked how it was very real and the cameras were following everyone around in their normal routines.
The Q&A part of the presentation was very helpful and honest. The women held nothing back and were willing to answer any question that was asked. I learned a lot about how strong Nor and IQ are. The women came from hard backgrounds and experiences that showed great courage. These women stand up for what they believe in and feel. They refuse to be oppressed in the world including the music industry, I would never think that anyone could walk all over these women without a strong fight back.
After this experience I am way more educated about gays and lesbians and the challenges that many face on a day to day basis. I am lucky to have many privileges that were never earned in my life. I think these women are doing the right thing to fight back. They are educating the uneducated and helping people have a better grasp at the issue. These women in my eyes are some of the strongest women I have ever come in contact with.
