Hey guys. I was thinking, we could interview people around campus and ask other to fill out a couple of surveys about our topic. Some topics that I think are really big, on campus, that we could cover are: "Beauty", and "Oppression in Gender and Race." To me; these are some really important topics that you see all round campus, and I think we would get some good results from the interviews and surveys.
Yes Sammy I really like that idea it sounds interesting. I feel like everyone is concerned with beauty and it would be a great discussion piece. I also think that the oppression topic is a good issue to focus on because it is a sensitive topic and could spark many debates and good responses. I also think to add to the project we could look up videos and clips that we could but in our presentation that talks about beauty and oppression. We could do some acting and show people what we mean by these topics by acting out scenes.
i think yall both have good ideas, i think that surveys and interviews will be a good way to get peoples input on the topic we chose. i think the beauty topic would be a good one, we could talk about the advertisment issues. another good topic might be heterosexism, to see what others think about homosexuality and all of that stuff. i think showing some video clips would be good also.
I agree with the topics. I feel like we would get some really good results and feedback from the "Beauty" topic because that is an issue that I think most people are aware of whether they realize it or not. The "Oppression" topic (both race and gender) is a good choice as well, especially with all of the racial incidents that have occurred on campus this semester.

Title: True Beauty on the UA Campus
Date of Presentation: Monday, April 18th
Hypothesis: University of Alabama’s campus life demonstrates that the Beauty Myth is present according to all different types of people.
Summary: Our group plans to make a public service announcement to allow the UA campus to be aware of the presence of the Beauty Myth on our campus. We plan to make a television commercial with interviews of different types of people from campus with their view of beauty. Also, we plan to make a billboard presenting facts of the Beauty Myth. We divided the work up evenly for each person to make an equal contribution to this project.
Project Concept: We want to focus our project on the students and teachers on the University of Alabama campus. We want to explore the idea of beauty accordingly to different races, sex, and sexualities and see if they are similar. What is a guy’s perspective of beauty? What is an ideal woman for him? Does he feel pressure to look a certain way? What are factors that pressure women to try to look the way they do? We want to ask professors point of view on beauty to see if the concept has changed over time and if the beauty myth has become more demanding today. We also want to find out if sexual orientation affects the view of beauty.
Literature Review: Naomi Wolf, “Excerpt from ‘The Beauty Myth’” pg. 145 Sirena Riley, “Black Beauty Myth” pg. 159 Christy Haubegger, “I’m Not Fat, I’m Latina” pg. 579 Linda Delgado, “Arroz con Pollo vs. Slim Fast” pg. 103 Bell hooks, “Straightening Our Hair” pg. 237 (Above are all readings from the textbook “Reading Women’s Lives”) Film: Killing Us Softly 4 Film: “A Girl Like Me” Teen Magazines that show the presence of the Beauty Myth/the pressure put on women and girls to look a certain way.
Project Method: We are going to make a TV advertisement by using a camera and use iMovie to edit the advertisement. For the billboard, we will use a poster board and create one with crafts to make it stand out. We are going to approach this project by interviewing different types of people on campus: greeks/non-greeks, different ages (students/professors), different races, different genders, and different sexualities on campus. We are going to pull research and statistics from in class powerpoints and homework readings.
Project Contribution: The reality of the “Beauty Myth” being present in our daily lives right here on the UA campus. We want people to be aware how it affects all different types of people. Whether or not their views and opinions of beauty are the same, all different groups are affected.
Individual Group Member Tasks: Everyone will interview different groups of people to get a general idea of their views and opinions on beauty. Lauren will be in charge of genders and ages. Matt will be in charge of men and their point of view on beauty. Sammy is in charge of professors and sexualities. Tiffany will be in charge of races and sexualities. Natalie is in charge of greeks and non greeks. Lauren, Tiffany, and Natalie will control putting the video together with the interviews of different types of people. Matt and Sammy will control the billboard with the facts about the Beauty Myth presented in a creative way. We want to make the video last for about 10 minutes and present the billboard for 5 minutes.
Agree Upon Schedule of Completion: The proposal will be worked on in the first group meeting and edited throughout the week till the Sunday it needs to be posted. The second group meeting will be used to map out exact questions to ask and finalize ideas together. The first weekend, we each plan to individually do research for our specified contributions to the project. The second weekend, Sammy and Matt will meet up to work on the billboard. Lauren, Tiffany, and Natalie will meet to work on the video. The third weekend will be used for us all to meet up and finalize the project by editing each other’s work to make sure everyone in the group approves everything. Also, we will work on practicing our presentation.
YAY! So thrilled you are creating a PSA...very nice project conception. Good questions as well. You seem like you are all set! Good luck, and have fun!
